BKS Iyengar’s birth dates back to 1918 in Bellur, Karnataka. At this time, Bellur was in the grip of the influenza epidemic. The guru therefore, was born sickly and weak and suffered from a host of diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, malnutrition and typhoid fever throughout his childhood.

In 1934, he migrated to Mysore on the advice of his brother-in-law Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. Although the guru gives all the credit to what he became to his teacher, their relationship was not strong always. At the onset, BKS Iyengar was seen by his teacher as a sick and measly teenager and was therefore, not considered fit for Yoga. He was involved in the household chores, until Sri Krishnamacharya’s favorite student, Keshavamurthy left. What happened after this is history.

Sri Krishnamacharya then took BKS Iyengar under his wing and made him try all the challenging postures. What’s more, at times, he was not even permitted to eat until he got the posture right. This is how BKS Iyengar took his first steps into Yoga.

Spreading Yoga   

Thanks to the insistence of his Guru, BKS Iyengar then moved to Pune in 1937 to spread his knowledge of Yoga. The pioneer of Iyengar yoga began his yoga demonstrations here, which lasted for about three – four hours every day. This was the beginning of his career into Yoga.

It was in the 1960’s, when the Americans and Europeans understood the benefits of Yoga and began practicing it, that Yoga with BKS Iyengar got noticed. He then set up his principal school of Yoga in 1975 in Pune. It is known as the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. This center for Iyengar yoga practice grew by leaps and bounds and BKS Iyengar began training even foreigners in this form of exercise, which makes the brain as well the body fit and healthy.
